SLAY Radio Gathering 2024 - We turn 25 years old!

SLAY Radio turns 25 years old, so we thought we would bring back the Gathering, at least for a one-off!

The main evening is Saturday the 3rd, as per tradition. Schedule and activities to be determined over discussions on our Discord server: https://slay.radio/discord

When: August 3, 2024
Where: Kville Biljard, Gothenburg, Sweden
Why: Celebrate SLAY Radio's 25th birthday!

Suffice it to say, that last time we had a Gathering in 2017, it was an absolute blast, and this will no doubt not disappoint either!

More info will be added here once details are known!

We also created a Facebook event, which you can find here.

Remixer of the Year Awards - Voting ends in two weeks!

Voting is closing soon for the Remixer of the Year Awards! Head over to https://www.remix64.com/roty.html to cast your votes!

Vote for the best of each category. The lists are unlimited, and they extend as you add entries. During the year you might stumble upon more and more candidates you think worthy for this list - you can return to this page to supplement/review your votes anytime. All entries receive equal scores, so the list order does not matter. This was different before 2015.

Entering text into the forms will drop-down a lookup list. This will help you find your desired mix or arranger promptly. Choosing your entry directly from the drop-down will also make sure that your entry is valid. Valid entries are marked 'ok', invalid entries are marked '?' and do not go into the results. Use the icons to delete an entry or to move it up and down in the list. Note that voting requires that you have JavaScript enabled.

Voting will be available until Sunday, 29th January 2023

RIP Tron

It is with great sadness I inform you that Tron, Erwin Beekveld, passed away in the afternoon of March 30.

His funeral will be streamed live on Monday, April 4th, 14:00 CEST here; https://bit.do/erwinbeekveld4apr

He was one of the kindest, most generous people I ever knew, always happy to have a chat, share his time and knowledge and his beloved Choco Milk. Over the years, he visited the SLAY Radio Gatherings many, many times, and every time he would bring a crate full of Choco Milk and share with everyone.
The tireless support he gave the remixing community over the years earned him a ROTY Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.

His love of photography was downright contagious, as was many of his other traits. Many an hour was spent discussing sound design, lighting, angles, lenses, how to find the lost sock after laundry - Always with great insight.

We met at every X party, where he would often pick us up, or drop us off at the airport, and always had a spare sleeping place in case it was needed.

I will miss you! ♥

For those who didn't get the chance to meet him yourselves, you may have heard his work without knowing it. He is the creator of "They're Taking the Hobbits to Isengard", among other things. Find out more with the links below:

Post-ROTY2020 Thank you!

A big thank you to all the remixers, listeners and contributors who made the past year better with their presence and help for the scene in any way!

The ROTY 2020 Awards was hosted by ziona, Boz and Slaygon on 20th February 2021.

2020 was the most active year since 2008 so we had a lot to talk about! See the graph about the activity over the years:
ROTY activity statistics
We did a recap of each month, covering C64 and Amiga remixes talking about the top 10 tracks, highlighting one from each RKO and Amigaremix.

In-between the recaps, the awards got presented.

THE WINNERS

- Best Newcomer: Ctrl-Z
- Best Veteran: Peter Clarke
- Best Amigaremix: Peter Clarke - Space Harrier
- Best C64 Remix: Peter Clarke - Space Harrier
- Lifetime Achievement Award: Vincenzo
- Remixer of the Year: Peter Clarke

The big winner, Peter Clarke felt delighted, surprised and humbled by the 4 awards - the community voted for him by a sizable margin. The previous and the only other time in the history when a remixer won 4 awards was Makke in 2005. It was also the first time the same song won both the C64 and the Amiga remix categories. Well done, Peter!

The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Vincenzo, who is an exceptionally active and supportive Veteran remixer and demoscene musician, both on PC and C64 scene, who has been around for about 22 years, an organizer and sound-guy of a tremendous amount of parties, member of countless demogroups with over 100 releases, nearly 100 SIDs in HVSC and 21 listed remixes. The reason for the Arok Tribute Remix Competition last year was also mainly his idea. In his professional life, he is a sound designer of games like Witcher 3, and the recent Chicken Police, where his soundtrack also won an award.

See his full Remixer bio here: https://www.remix64.com/member/vincenzo/
His SIDs in HVSC: https://deepsid.chordian.net/?file=/MUSICIANS/V/Vincenzo/
And his demoscene history here: https://demozoo.org/sceners/1280/

ALBUM RELEASES

We also had a fantastic year in terms of album releases, enriching the scene with 213 tracks on 12 professional albums, thanks to various artists including FastLoaders, Instant Remedy, Matt Gray, Mordi, Rob Hubbard & Marcel Donne. A special mention to Chris Abbott who was the busiest with 3 releases, including the marvelous 8-Bit Symphony Pro, which transformed C64 music to a Hollywood-style professionally orchestrated and recorded production!

Album Releases in 2020

See the whole list of albums here: https://www.remix64.com/albums/

Remix64 20th Anniversary Remix Compo

Remix64.com will turn 20 years old on April 17th, 2021, and we thought what better way to celebrate this momentous occasion than by inviting the collective talent of the C64 and Amiga remix community to participate in an online competition!

The compo entry rules are fairly simple:

Your entry should be a remix of a SID tune (found in the latest HVSC) or of an Amiga game tune / MOD - or both. Basically, the same submission rules apply as on Remix.kwed.org and on AmigaRemix.com, including rules related to file format (MP3, 192 Kbps/44Khz or better).

Your remix should be a new, never before published piece.
Your remix should be no more than 5 minutes in length.

Multiple entries per remixer are allowed, but please, keep in mind that the compo organizers reserve the right to reject entries.

The deadline for entries is April 2, Friday, 23:59 Central European Time.

NOTE: to be able to submit an entry you must be a registered user on Remix64.com. To submit your entry, visit the following page:

Remix64 20th Anniversary Remix Compo Submission Page

Voting:

Public voting on the entries will commence April 3 at Remix64.com and voting will close on April 15, Thursday, 23:59 CET.
Entries will be anonymized for voting.

More details about the voting will be coming soon.

Results will be announced on April 17th - the very day on which Remix64 celebrates its 20th year!

MULTIPLE PRIZES AWARDED!

The more entries we get, the more prizes will be awarded! So, whether you are a veteran remixer or whether this will be your first ever remix, whether you want to submit a techno-style remix or a bluegrass one - all will have a chance to win something, as we are planning to award prizes not just to the top voted remix, but to multiple entries. But that depends on how many entries we'll get - the more entries, the bigger possibility for multiple prizes! So, get busy, start working on a remix, or dust off that old half-done remix of yours and finish it already!

Let the 20th Anniversary festivities begin!

Who was the most active and supportive remixer? Who did the best remix? Who was the best newcomer, the best veteran?

And please, do not forget to vote for the Amiga remixes! We don't want the same situation we've had a couple of times where we have had 9 (yes, NINE!) people sharing the same position! Make life easier for poor Tron, who usually does the voice-overs for the ROTY show!

As the host running most of the SLAY Radio services, including the source relays and the website, has a bit of broken hardware, it will need to be replaced. SLAY Radio's Arok Tribute Remix Compo results

A great, big thank you to all who contributed tracks to this competition!

The quality of the tracks contributed was really, really high and the resulting compo was tight as a result!

To view the full list of the results, check the Arok Tribute Remix Compo votes page!

A special thank you to the Arok crew for holding a remix compo every year at the party, and an extra special thank you to Vincenzo and Teo who, each year, has their one-to-one compo, remixing the same original SID. This was the driving force for creating this compo in the first place, because they missed having the party and their annual duel!

Also, a big thank you to Boz for co-hosting the compo show on Thursday, Marcel Donné for the intro for the show, and everyone who joined us on the live streams and to everyone who voted!

Extended voting deadline!

ATTENTION all Listeners, Remixers & Voters of the competition!

Due to some technical issues related to a database upgrade made in the morning of the show to accommodate the new voting system for the competition, some functions such as sign-up and password recovery stopped working on the home page.

Although these functions are now repaired and should work properly, we decided to extend the voting by 12 hours, so it will close at 12:00 CEST on Saturday.

If you still experience difficulties, please reach out to slaygon at slayradio.org. If you tried password recovery and didn't receive an email, check your Spam folder too!

Good luck everyone!

ATTENTION: Wrongly contributed track

A while back, someone contributed a remix to the Arok Tribute Remix Compo by uploading a file to the upload area named "Visage-192kbps.mp3".

It contained no further information, and will thus be disqualified from the competition.

If you are the person who uploaded it, or know who did, please re-upload the file with proper ID3 tags!

To reiterate the specific rule:

* PLEASE FILL YOUR ENTRY'S ID3 TAG with Title and Composer data. Please denote SID and subtune the remix is based on.

We also encourage all participants to write a few sentences about their remixes (why you chose it, what inspired you - Anything goes) in TXT or DOC format. This text will be displayed on the video stream. Upload MP3 and TXT/DOC as a ZIP!

We would hate to disqualify this track from the competition, so please, re-upload it with proper tagging!

Cheers, and happy remixing!

New album: Cinematic 64

Over the past few years, I have been working on an album. Granted, it is not the longest one you have ever come across (tee-hee), and likely not even the best, unless you have been hiding under a rock in the Amazonas, honing your ant communication skills, in which case it is absolutely amazing!

It does, however, have some songs on it. Some even have notes in them, and others have some cool sounds. One even has guitars from Vaggelis Papadopoulos!

What they all have in common, is that they start before they end. The other thing they have in common is that they are remixes of Commodore 64 SIDs. And the third that they are on the same album, which has been gloriously mastered by Lagerfeldt. And it has a gorgeous album cover by Trevor Storey. Just look at it!

The aim was to create a cinematic soundscape that I would enjoy hearing on a somewhat dark type of movie. Perhaps that would tickle your ears too.

Proceeds from sales will go toward all sorts of things needed for SLAY Radio, like hardware to host the home page, streaming software, licenses, microphones, sound cards and various other bits to be able to keep streaming and put my ugly face and occasionally a concert or two on that there Youtubes and Facebooks of the world via webcams and such.

And of course, some of the proceeds would go toward buying more noisy stuff so I can do more music in the future, most of which is being released for free on Remix.Kwed.Org, so you would be supporting that side of things too!

So, if there is any interest in supporting any of this (potentially minus the ugly mug on cam), you can head over here:

CINEMATIC64.COM

The math to calculate the album cost is really complicated, so allow me to walk you through it; one (1) EUR per track, seven (7) for the album. Because seven tracks.
There may or may not be a bonus track or two.

If you backed the 8-bit-symphony.com kickstarter, you will get this album through that!

You can find a wonderful review of the album by LaLa on Remix64: https://www.remix64.com/reviews/slaygon-cinematic-64-review-by-lala.html

Remix compo at BIT Live 2019

On behalf of the organizers of Back In Time 2019, we invite everyone to join the Back In Time 2019 Remix Competition!

This is the first time the organizers host such a competition, and this year's theme is Rob Hubbard and Matt Gray.
Remote entries are very welcome, but what could be better than to listen to your remix together with the legends themselves?

The entry must be Commodore / Amiga related and be either a remix of a tune by Rob Hubbard or Matt Gray, or be a remix that includes identifiable parts from at least 2 tunes composed by either Rob Hubbard or Matt Gray, and no other composers. Either way, one or both of these composers need to be present in the remix. New self-composed elements by the remixer is allowed, but the theme of Rob Hubbard / Matt Gray must be in focus.

* The entry must not contain samples of copyrighted material.
* The entry must not have been previously published.
* The remixer will keep all rights to the remix, but the organizers of Back in Time 2019 will be allowed to play the remix at any time during the festival.

As the BIT2019 website is now up and running, you can find more information there, including how to submit your entry.

Click the image to get there!

RIP Ben Daglish

As most of you have already heard, Ben Daglish passed away on Monday the 1st, losing his battle with lung cancer.

I had the great pleasure of meeting him several times. He had this aura about him that just made the room light up with joy!
An amazing musician, and an even more colourful person.

Ben - You will be missed!

Om nom omnia!

We have, at long last, switched from the old audio chain to the new one.
While doing so, we also changed the streams around a little bit.

- [port 8000] The 128kbps Mp3 stream remains as-is, but uses the new encoders
- [port 8100] The previous 56kbps AAC+ stream is now a 64kbps Mp3 stream
- [port 8200] 24kbps stream remains an AAC+ just as before
- [port 8300] A new 128kbps AAC+ stream has been set up on this port

Most players these days can decode AAC+, while some might need an extra plugin to work. Please refer to the documentation of your favorite player for details on that.

Now go get those free TCP Packets!

How much music is much music?

I decided to take a look at the traffic stats on my SLAYRadio relay and found out that it had pushed 1.1TB since last boot. That is a lot of bytes.

So, checking uptime says that is has been running for some 74 days and 15 hours, which is 107460 minutes, and in that time it has sent 1311432403594 bytes, for an average of 203 kilobytes/second all day and all night.

Of course there are more people in different times of the day and most people tend to drop in during live shows, but for anyone wanting to know how much data the relays push, this one machine is showing 20% (given that there are currently five relays) of the output needed to feed all the listeners. It seems like SLAY is totalling some 10MBits/s overall. Not bad at all.

SSL/TLS, downloads etc

This site is now accessible over TLS, i.e. https. You will need something fairly modern to access it, and have TLS 1.1 enabled (1.0 is disabled). Internet Explorer has, for some reason, TLS 1.1/1.2 disabled by default so those of you using that piece of c...ode might want to check the settings before assuming things are broken.

Also, show downloads are back online under Archive->Live Show Archive. Shows aired between March and December 7 will be tagged, uploaded and activated as time allows.

Until we are in sync, shows aired between July and December 7 are available at http://filebin.net/grryex8cuc/, courtesy of dedicated listeners ConductR, GreMFne, shargo, and Gohanks.

You will also find Mastering Swedish under the same tab.

Slow progress, but progress.

There has been a lot of things going on behind the curtains. An all new engine to drive the pages has been developed.
This, as you can imagine, has lead to a number of features rendered unavailable.

We are working on getting more features back online. Currently there are 3 people working on the front end of things (meaning; the website), and 2 that works on backend things.

There has been a lot of activity to get the pages back.
For instance, the number of commits to the repository by month break down like so:
52 - February
390 - March
25 - April
37 - May

As you can see, we slowed down in April, mostly due to the immense amount of work we had to put down in March to get things out to you.

These numbers do not include the work that has been done to move the entire radio stack out from SLAY HQ, replacing it with two entirely new servers hosted on two different sites.

In any case, if there is a feature you are waiting for, know that it will come when we get to it!

Cheers everyone!

NecroPolo - rakBIT added to the rotational

Hi all,

With the kind permission of NecroPolo, I have today added his album rakBIT to the rotational.

Here's what c64audio.com says about this piece of retro goodness:

"NecroPolo has produced a stunning album which is built on a vintage prog-sound: from hard as nails to Rhodes-heaven, NecroPolo has got beneath the skin of the pieces and created something which is totally authentic to their spirit.

As if that wasn't enough, this album features the first ever C64-executable album cover, complete with classic scrolltext and the original SIDs that appear on the album, in one PRG!

And if THAT wasn't enough, this demo contains the first ever usage of a revolutionary new SID encoding format which enables any complexity of SID to be played back with minimal raster time, no matter how complex the player! Named SIDRIP, this routine was produced by Hermit specially for this demo, because pieces such as Scoll Machine or Rimrunner needed to feature in this demo, and their players were far too difficult to squeeze into a one-file demo."

Thanks NecroPolo!

RSS Feeds

I got bored and implemented some RSS feeds on the pages... Wherever you see the RSS feed icon, there's a feed for you to fetch. Currently the following feeds should be available to you:

SLAY Radio News (such as this)
Live Show schedule
Song discussions
Shoutbox

And the external RSS feeds used on this page are:

Remix.Kwed.Org
Remix64
C64.COM

Hope you find some use for these!

Cheerio!

SLAY Radio Crash Course: Mastering Swedish - Part 4

Boz has now lived in Sweden since mid June, and we've been listening to what he has problems with language-wise, so we decided to let Boz go for a session on these things. This lesson features the letters K, G and Y. Mostly. =)

SLAY Radio Crash Course: Mastering Swedish - Part 3

Following up on the success Boz made with both Lesson 1 and 2 of Mastering Swedish, Slaygon and Makke decided to continue with yet another lesson. This time around, we've done it really tricky for Boz, but he does just fine!

SLAY Radio Crash Course: Mastering Swedish - Part 1

One afternoon, Slaygon and Makke decided to give Boz, who is moving to Sweden, a helping hand.

They decided to build a crash course in Swedish. The first lession was built in a hurry on Wednesday, April 27.
The purpose was to build a proper sounding course with both Swedish and English pronounciation.
Being done in a hurry, this means that it isn't always done so properly, as the language perfectionist will realise when listening to the course.

Anyway, it was fun doing this, and even more fun listening to it, mostly thanks to Boz who did some hilarious remarks about the text while being on air, broadcasting to a big bunch of people. =)
